New units for middle school!

Volume 1 Orphan Archetype

This unit is the first volume in a series of units for middle school! Specific grade levels will not be assigned to the units, allowing you to have the flexibility to design a scope and sequence to best meet the needs of your students. To provide curriculum for the full-year, select three units for your grade level.

Each unit is built around a single character archetype that is common across literature. Students think about the protagonist's character arc and how the plot and character work together to create a story. Each student will read two novels in each unit:

• A whole-class novel to introduce the archetype and model the skills, and
• A differentiated title matching each student's skill level (below, on, and above grade-level).

The middle school program elevates what students have learned previously in the Read Side by Side Reading Program, 3-6. The program continues to teach the CIA (Collect-Interpret-Apply) approach, but turns students' attention to analytical reading.
