Unit 5.2

Students learn about complex story structure as they read the realistic fiction  story, Holes together in read-aloud and are matched to one of three realistic fiction stories in book clubs: There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom, The Janitor's Boy or Wonder.

Unit 5.3

Students learn about the American Revolution and slavery as they read the historical fiction novel, Chains together in read-aloud and then corroborate the facts in the information nonfiction book club, American Revolution.

Unit 5.4

Students learn about the Industrial Revolution and child labor in the biography of Lewis Hine titled Kids at Work. They are then matched to one of three historical fiction novels in book clubs: Iqbal, Counting on Grace, or Lyddie.

Unit 5.5

Students learn about science fiction as they read the book The City of Ember together in read-aloud and are matched to one of three science fiction stories in book clubs: Among the Hidden, First Light, or Code Orange.
